Tradition, innovation and values

Since the Faculty of Theology joined the University of Deusto ecosystem, there has been a change in student profiles, which now include mainly lay profiles. The Faculty's students are also committed to academic exchange with other degree programmes.

The Theology Library, which since 1981 has been located next to the Loyola Library of Philosophy, today forms part of the large University of Deusto Library. The automated catalogue contains 80,740 monographs from a bibliographic collection specialising in theology that totals 90,000 copies. The periodicals collection has 1,348 titles.

Electronic resources include the most important theological databases.

Why study Theology?

01

It helps to frame the question of God as part of the search for transcendence inherent in every human being and every culture.

02

It explains and justifies what Christianity claims about the God revealed in Jesus of Nazareth.

03

It teaches how to read the Bible today and extract current and meaningful insights from it for my own personal and social life.

04

It reports on the wealth of thought and practice built up by Christianity over the two millennia of its history.

05

It engages with all kinds of core issues - philosophical, anthropological, social, scientific-technical, economic, political and moral concerns - and brings a unique and specific perspective to address them.

06

It helps to gain insight into reality, i.e. understand and critically evaluate today's society and its cultural transformation and promotes Christian discernment to face the challenges of today's world.

07

It enables me to position myself better in the contemporary context of religious pluralism and allows me to discuss the phenomenon of secularisation and the public sphere.

08

It allows me to ground my own spirituality and be critical in the midst of the proliferation of spiritualities in today's culture.
