Immigration procedures

The EU Citizen Registration Certificate is the official green paper document required for EU students who intend to reside in Spain for more than 90 days.

The most important thing is that, when you apply for this certificate, you are automatically assigned a NIE (Foreigner Identification Number), which is your unique personal code required to:

  • Open a Spanish bank account .
  • Sign a rental agreement.
  • Take out services such as Internet or electricity.
  • Register with the healthcare system or get personalised transport cards.

The TIE (Foreigner Identity Card) is the physical document that certifies the legal residence in Spain of non-EU nationals. Unlike the green certificate issued to EU citizens, this is a plastic card containing your photograph and fingerprints, as well as your NIE (Foreigner Identification Number).

Compliance with these deadlines is vital in order to avoid an irregular situation:

  • Entry into Spain: you have 30 calendar days from your arrival (or from the entry into the Schengen area) to request an appointment for the card.
  • Validity: normally granted for one year (or the duration of your course).
  • Renewal or extension: you must initiate renewal within 60 days before your card expires (or up to 90 days after, maximum). It is a 100% online process.
  • Card collection: once fingerprinting is done, it takes about 30-45 days for the card to be ready for collection at the police station.
