La línea de Ética Organizacional del Centro de Ética Aplicada combina investigación y transferencia para detectar los desafíos éticos de las organizaciones y proporcionar servicios de acompañamiento para el desarrollo competencias éticas.

What is ethics?

The purpose of Business Ethics is to seek the meaning and scope of what it means to be an ethically oriented company, which recognises itself as part of society, is aware of the positive and negative impacts it generates and assumes its responsibility in relation to these impacts.

Broadly speaking, business ethics today is concerned with two levels, the individual and the organisational. The individual level is interested in aspects related to professional ethics and explores issues such as leadership or professional virtues. It looks at conflicts of interest, honesty, autonomy in the performance of tasks or non-discrimination in the working environment, among other issues.

 

At theorganisational level, business ethics analyses the purpose of organisations, the mission they have and communicates to society as a whole, and the values that make up their culture and underpin their project and activities.

Without overlooking the individual level, the Organisational Ethics area of the Centre for Applied Ethics pays special attention to corporate citizenship This approach highlights their social role and the responsibilities it entails for their project, activities and behaviours.

Corporate citizenship

What is corporate citizenship?

The corporate citizenship model seeks to respond to the current moment, in which there is a growing ethical demand towards companies. It stems from research carried out at the Centre for Applied Ethics (CAE). It is based on the academic term of corporate citizenship.

What is new about this proposal?

The corporate citizenship model suggests embedding civic principles into the culture and operations of organisations, making it an integral part of their activities rather than something separate. 

It suggests that the organisation actively participates in public dialogue with the society it affects, working collaboratively to tackle the social, environmental, and economic challenges it encounters.

Corporate citizenship refers to an organisation that understands that it is a member of the community and is aware that it is interconnected and interdependent.

This means that their contribution to society is not limited to providing goods or services or complying with the law. In addition to its own interests, it serves the interests of society as a whole.

Researchers have identified a total of 12 characteristics that define corporate citizenship. And they have developed a method to help organisations make that change and to reflect and analyse:

  • How they think they should be
  • How they present themselves to society
  • How this ideal would be realised in practice.

Comunidad de Aprendizaje ético de la función directiva

DIRÉCTICA

Directica es una comunidad de aprendizaje integrada por académicos y personas con funciones directivas. Su objetivo es detectar necesidades y encontrar respuestas para ayudar a las empresas a afrontar sus desafíos éticos.

En las sesiones mensuales, el equipo utiliza métodos y categorías propias de la ética aplicada para definir y analizar desafíos éticos que surgen en el desempeño profesional. Reflexionan conjuntamente sobre la construcción de respuestas que se puedan incorporar a contextos organizacionales concretos.

Business ethics at Mutualia

Training and consultancy

In its 2015 strategic review, Mutualia noted that the greatest risk for mutual insurance companies was not financial, but rather their legitimacy in the eyes of society.

The company's management decided to establish the goal of transforming it into asocially responsible businessduring this period. The organisation informed the Centre for Applied Ethics (CAE) of its willingness to incorporate the ethical perspective into its management. At the time, Mutualia had a code of ethics.

  • The new Code and the new structure of the Ethics Committee mark a step in the evolution of Mutualia's ethical character. The organisation has shifted from a focus on legal compliance and individual behaviours to one that assumes thecompany's responsibility to contribute to the common good beyond legal requirements.
  • There is a noticeable shift in language and amore rigorous understanding of issues such as values, the code of ethics, and the responsibilityof those who lead the company's ethical initiatives.
  • There isa greater alignment between the ethical concerns of individuals and those of the organisation, both in theory and in the concrete aspects of daily practice and decision-making.
  • Blended training for the entity's governing bodies, leaders, and works council. Access to an e-learning space for all employees. In total, more than 6,800 hours of training were delivered both in-person and online. The aim was to foster motivation and the ability to address ethical dilemmas both individually and collectively.
  • Review of the code of ethics. Two academics from the CAE advised the team responsible for reviewing the code of ethics to include over 600 contributions from the organisation’s employees.
  • Adaptation of the organisational structures that manage ethical practices. Members of the CEA provided training, guidance, and support for the roles assigned to the newly established Ethics Committee.
