Jakiunde, the Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters, whose sphere of activity covers the Basque Autonomous Community, Navarre and the North Basque Country, has taken a decisive step in its development with the arrival in Madrid of the exhibition ‘26 Women in Science, Arts and Letters’. This marks a significant milestone: for the first time, the work and voices of 26 female academics are being showcased from a landmark venue such as the Royal Botanic Garden – CSIC, in the very heart of Madrid’s cultural district.

The exhibition, open until 11 January 2026 in the south wing of the Villanueva Pavilion, brings together the reflections and careers of 26 Jakiunde academics through photographs and videos by Marina Palacio, aiming to highlight the role of women in knowledge and innovation. Among these academics is University of Deusto researcher and Professor Begoña García Zapirain. Further information

Talks

As a complement to the exhibition, a series of public talks will be held in the Assembly Hall of the Royal Botanic Garden, where several of the exhibition’s participants will explore major contemporary issues from a plural and interdisciplinary perspective. These talks will conclude on 8 January 2026 with the debate “Does Artificial Intelligence Really Make Our Lives Easier?”, featuring Deusto’s AI expert, Professor Begoña García-Zapirain, and engineer Oihana Otaegui, Director of the Transport and Safety Division at VICOMTECH.
