As part of the seventh Deusto Research Social Impact 2023 Seal, Deusto has recognised the work of 11 new projects for their positive impact and social transformation.
The projects that have received the Deusto Research Social Impact Label 2023 have been promoted by the various Faculties and research units at the University of Deusto: Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences, Basque Institute of Competitiveness, OrkestraDeusto Business School.
This year's projects aim to provide innovative solutions to a range of topical issues such as:
- Generation of sustainable wealth in the territory.
- Food waste reduction.
- Ageing and well-being
- Gender perspective and behavioural addictions.
- The impact of Covid on migrant women.
- Ensuring safety in the agri-food value chain
- Promoting exercise and health improvement
- The role of ports in the energy transition
- Encouraging STEM vocations among young people
- Promoting personalised health
- Development and innovation in food security
Each of the projects has demonstrated its potential for social impact in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, European policy priorities and/or the Basque Government's RIS3 strategy. In turn, project leaders have collaborated with non-academic actors such as municipalities, companies and non-profit organisations. They also provide answers that go beyond scientific progress in the area of knowledge, providing evidence of the adoption, use and exploitation of the results by the relevant external actors and of the dissemination and valuation of the results in the target group.

DEGUSI - Diagnosis and succession strategies for SMEs in Guipuzkoa to ensure the generation of sustainable wealth in the territory.
- Research staff: Cristina Aragón Amonarriz, Cristina Iturrioz Landart.
- Deusto Business school. The research project is linked to the Interdisciplinary Research Platform on Strengthening Participation.
- The project promotes collaboration to maintain the activity and decision-making power of companies in the territory, encouraging networking and its social impact, fostering employability, focusing on the generation and transfer of knowledge and boosting intersectoral collaboration in research and transfer.
FOODRUS - An innovative and collaborative circular food system to reduce food waste and losses in the agri-food chain.

- Faculty of Engineering. The research project is linked to the Interdisciplinary Research Platform B-Creative
- The FoodRUs research project has been built on the fundamental pillars of food sovereignty to address the challenge of Food Waste Prevention, with the Circular Economy being a compelling model upon which to co-create, implement and replicate solutions thanks to a multistakeholder and multidisciplinary approach.
FRAAGILE-Platform to detect and prevent frailty and falls
- Research Staff: Begoña García-Zapirain Soto, Amaia Méndez Zorrilla, Ibon Oleagordia Ruiz, Felix Colas.
- Faculty of Engineering. The research project is linked to the Interdisciplinary Platform for Research on Ageing and Well-being.
- The main objective of the frAAgiLe research project is to identify the level of frailty in older people and, depending on the resulting level, to assign different mental and physical training plans to monitor this level.
GENDERCOMP - A Gender Perspective on Behavioural Addictions.
- Research staff: Ana Estévez, Laura Macia, Paula Jauregui, Janire Momeñe, Nerea Etxaburu, Milena López.
- Faculty of Health Sciences. The research project is linked to the Interdisciplinary Gender Research Platform
- The main objective of the GENDERCOMP research project is to analyse mental disorders such as behavioural addictions from a gender perspective.
HARRESIAK - The impact of COVID-19 on migrant women and on intervention with them: maintaining closeness, accompanying and managing emotions in times of pandemic.
- Research staff: Miguel Angel Navarro Las Beeches and Itziar Gandarias Goikoetxea.
- Faculty of Health Sciences. The research project is linked to the Interdisciplinary Gender Research Platform
- The research project analysed the psychosocial impact of the pandemic on migrant women in different areas: mental health, housing, employment and social participation.
ISOHEALTH-Consultancy for the development of isometric exercise machines.
- Research staff: Aitor Goti Elordi, Arkaitz Castañeda Babarro, Fernando Cortés Martínez.
- Faculty of Engineering. The research project is linked to the health area.
- The project seeks to promote exercise through isometrics (non-movement training), validating it as a tool for improving health and developing products linked to it.
PORTRE-The role of ports in the energy transition
- Research Staff: Macarena Larrea Basterra
- Basque Competitiveness Institute. Orkestra. The research project is linked to the clean and efficient energy area.
- This project aims to assess the role of ports in the energy transition from a twofold perspective, the port as a driver of port activity and as a link in maritime port clusters.
R3-Rural, Remote and Real

- Faculty of Engineering. The research project is linked to the Interdisciplinary Research Platform on Social Justice and Inclusion.
- The specific objective of the R3 Project is to promote STEM vocations among young people in rural areas through remote laboratories.
RESISTIRÉ - RESpondIng to outbreakS through co-creaTIve inclusive equality stRatEgies

- Faculty of Social and Human Sciences. The research project is linked to the Interdisciplinary Gender Research Platform.
- RESISTIRÉ is a research project that aims to find sustainable solutions to gender inequalities and strengthen society's resilience to epidemic outbreaks.
TECAM- Technological solutions for the control of allergens and pathogenic microorganisms to guarantee safety in the agri-food value chain through disruptive rapid analysis technologies.

- Faculty of Engineering. The research project is linked to the Health Area.
- The project aims to carry out research in a framework of collaboration between Sectoral Technology Centres, University and Multi-focused Technology Centres by integrating the necessary components for research, development and innovation in food safety, working in accordance with the strategy described in the Elkartek programme.
WISEINTERVENTIONS - Smart interventions to improve quality of life and health in adolescents

- Faculty of Health Sciences. This project is linked to the Interdisciplinary Platform for Research on Ageing and Well-being.
- The project contributes to personalised health promotion. A novel intervention methodology involving a set of rigorous theory and research-based techniques that address specific psychological processes to enable people to thrive in a variety of life settings.
Obtaining the social impact label will give you access to the annual call of the UD-Santander Award "Research with scientific and social impact". This award recognises and rewards teams' research according to its impact, with a financial allocation to fund research actions.
