Lorena Fernández, head of the University’s Artificial Intelligence Committee, is a member of the “Women and AI” working group within the Spanish Agency for the Supervision of Artificial Intelligence's (AESIA) Ideas Lab, which recently held another meeting at the headquarters of the Ministry for Digital Transformation and the Civil Service.

This working group, established by the Spanish Agency for the Supervision of Artificial Intelligence (AESIA) in collaboration with the Institute for Women, aims to tackle technology-facilitated gender-based violence and help eliminate gender bias in artificial intelligence systems by promoting the development and oversight of AI in ways that ensure equality, protect fundamental rights and prevent discrimination.

AESIA's Ideas Lab was established as a forum for analysis, research and the generation of specialist knowledge to anticipate the impact of artificial intelligence on society and develop proposals to promote ethical, safe and trustworthy AI. It brings together experts from fields including technology, law, education, philosophy, equality and human rights with the aim of promoting participatory governance of this technology. Its initial areas of work include the ‘Women and AI’, ‘Disinformation and AI’, ‘Children and AI’ and ‘Labour Market and AI’ working groups.

Deusto’s participation in this working group reinforces the University’s commitment to the development of people-centred artificial intelligence, in line with ethical principles, equal opportunities and responsible innovation.

The findings and recommendations produced by the ‘Women and AI’ working group will help inform public policy proposals and best practices aimed at preventing the risks associated with artificial intelligence and ensuring that its development neither reproduces nor reinforces gender inequalities.
