2018 has been a year of consolidation and growth of DEUSTO International Research.
Excellent research and science are not possible without excellent and talented researchers. As result of its outstanding expertise and excellent work, DEUSTO participated in 2018 in 32 international research projects, 20 of them funded by the EU Programme for Research and Innovation: Horizon 2020; and this figure is likely to keep on growing as several of the proposals submitted have already been approved!
2018 has consolidated the work of the 5 DEUSTO Interdisciplinary Research Platforms, bringing together more than 160 researchers from the different Faculties and Units of the University of Deusto, DeustoTech and Orkestra. Together they have been working to bring up solutions to the challenges our societies are facing. In alignment with EU 2020 Strategy, DEUSTO Researchers share ideas and work on projects to:
- tackle the challenges of an ageing society (Ageing and Wellbeing platform)
- sustain and reproduce the creative capital of our cities (B-Creative platform)
- promote gender equality in our societies (Gender platform)
- contribute to social justice and make our societies more inclusive and fairer (Social Justice and Inclusion platform)
- strengthen civic participation and promote socio-economic transformations for regional development, inclusion and growth (Strengthening Participation platform)
Based on a strong cross-sectoral collaboration with local, regional, national and international stakeholders, researchers work closely with more than 870 organisations (public administration, business, non-profit organisations, education and training institutions, technology centres and international networks) in a process of co-creation.
2018 is also the year of consolidation and expansion of DEUSTO Research Social Impact activities. Until today, the University of Deusto has recognised 25 research projects with social impact and has selected 3 new projects for the publication of the Social Impact Briefings. On 13-14 September 2018, it organised the Workshop With the hand in dough: Paving the way to the social impact dimension of research, which brought together key leading international experts to discuss the Social Impact dimension of Research. The main conclusions and key messages coming out of the workshop were published in the paper “Universities, Policy Makers and Stakeholders fostering Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) nested systems for Societal Impact” and presented at the international conference organised the Austrian Presidency of the EU Council: “Impact of Social Sciences and Humanities for a European Research Agenda – Valuation of SSH in mission-oriented research”. It has also launched a pilot exercise to analyse the social impact of its research projects via the Social Impact Licensing Agency.
Besides the work carried in the framework of Deusto International Research School (DIRS), our support offices have organised 9 training sessions, 2 in collaboration with Deusto Research Innovation Transfer Office (DEIKER-OTRI) and 1 with the University of the Basque Country, on relevant themes such as: How to write a competitive proposal in Horizon 2020 with special focus on impact; IPR and Data management in research projects; Post-doctoral funding schemes; Sustainable Development Goals.
Well done!
