Bilbao Donostia-San Sebastián
The University of Deusto joins once again in the celebrations of World Social Work Day, a key occasion to highlight the role of this discipline in building fairer and more inclusive societies. This year, the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences has organised events on both campuses to connect students and staff with real-life social intervention experiences.
Bilbao: The «Harambee« Spirit for uniting society
On 16 March, the Bilbao campus hosted the event «Building Hope and Harmony». Under the motto Harambee - a Swahili term meaning “pulling together” or “joining forces”—the event emphasised the importance of collective action in a divided society.
Moderated by Amaia Mosteiro, Head of the Social Work Degree in Bilbao, the session featured presentations by Marian Arias Roncero and Diego Menéndez Benito (Askabide Association) and Marra Junior (Médecins du Monde).
The guests shared their experiences of working with people in situations of exclusion, emphasising the need to act with solidarity and active participation to achieve genuine inclusion.
Next meeting in San Sebastian: Child protection in Pasaia
Continuing these celebrations, the San Sebastian campus will hold its own session on Monday, 30 March. Under the title «Building a protective community for children: The Pasaia experience», the session will focus on how the local environment can serve as a well-being shield for young people.
To examine this successful model, the event will feature Marian Suárez, Maite Kortajarena and Ziortza Rodríguez.
The session will take place at 12:00 in the Foro Room of the Larramendi Building, where participants will discuss shared responsibility and community strategies to safeguard children’s rights.
Through these two events, the Faculty reaffirms its commitment to training professionals capable of transforming social realities through both proximity and academic rigour.
