Cancer is the world's leading health and social care challenge. It is estimated that 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will develop cancer during their lifetime. In Spain, someone is diagnosed with cancer every two minutes, and it is estimated that by 2030 there will be more than 317,000 new cases. Against this backdrop, the University of Deusto and the Bizkaia Cancer Association have joined forces to launch joint initiatives aimed at promoting cancer prevention and ensuring a comprehensive approach to the disease.

Through this agreement, signed by the Rector, Juan José Etxeberria, and the President of the Bizkaia Cancer Association, María Milagrosa Gullón, the University of Deusto will support and promote the Association's campaigns and initiatives to provide information and raise awareness about the benefits of adopting healthy lifestyle habits to help prevent cancer. The University will also support any other initiatives that benefit people affected by cancer and their families, or that contribute to cancer prevention and oncology research. The University will also provide members of the University community and other users requiring cancer-related support with information about the range of free services the Association offers free of charge to people with cancer and their families and carers.

In addition, the two organisations will work together to develop educational and public awareness activities, as well as talks and workshops aimed at supporting people with cancer and their families. These sessions, led by experts, will be free of charge and will be open to the public whenever the topics are considered to be of wider public interest. The agreement also provides for the promotion of volunteering opportunities with the Association among the different groups within the University community.
