The University of Deusto has been awarded first prize in the “Public or Private Entities or Organisations” category of the Aulas por la Igualdad Awards: STEAM Alliance Awards 2024, presented by the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports. These Awards aim to recognise educational projects that promote STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) vocations among girls and young women in the educational environment, helping to reduce the gender gap in this field.
This award, which carries a prize of €5,000, recognises the Inspira STEAM programme at the University, a project launched in 2016 that was a pioneer in promoting scientific and technological careers, especially among girls. It is based on group mentoring activities and is aimed at students in 6th year of primary school and 1st year of secondary school, who discuss and reflect on STEAM subjects with professionals from these fields—people from the worlds of research, science, and technology—who participate in the programme on a voluntary basis.
Throughout its nine editions, more than 2,800 mentors and 300 mentors have worked with almost 50,000 girls and boys from 550 schools, showing their careers and professions, broadening the view of the scientific-technological world, breaking stereotypes and bringing STEAM references closer to the youngest students. In different editions, the programme has been carried out in the Basque Country, Galicia, Asturias, La Rioja, Aragón, Catalonia, Madrid, Castellón, Murcia, the Canary Islands, Andalusia, Chile, and Argentina.
The STEAM Alliance Awards are part of the national strategy “Girls in Science,” launched to encourage innovative projects that have a real impact on both educational theory and practice. In this edition, awards have been given in five categories covering early childhood, primary, secondary, and post‑16 education, vocational training, and organisations outside the school sector.
n the Public or Private Organisations category, alongside Deusto, the Esplugues de Llobregat City Council (second prize) and the Spanish National Research Council (third prize) were also awarded. In addition, the jury awarded honorary mentions to the Ministry of Education of the Junta de Extremadura, the Young Women’s Federation, the ASTI Talent and Technology Foundation, and the CERES Foundation.
With this recognition, the University of Deusto reinforces its commitment to education in equality and to promoting female talent in areas that are strategic for social and economic development.
