The academic year kicks off with the welcome days for international students and first-year students.

621 exchange students from more than 50 different countries will study in Bilbao and San Sebastian during this first academic semester. More than 2,500 new undergraduate students are starting their degree courses at Deusto’s campuses this year.

Bilbao Campus San Sebastian Campus

The University of Deusto begins its academic activity on 4 September with a welcome reception for international students and a welcome day for first-year students. A total of 619 exchange students, most of them from the Erasmus + mobility programme, from partner universities in 50 different countries, will study in Bilbao (494) and San Sebastian (127) this first semester, as well as 40 more students participating in the Virtual Campus from their countries of origin.

The students come from the following countries: Germany, Andorra, Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Belarus, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China, Cyprus, Colombia, Denmark, Slovakia, Slovenia, United States, Estonia, Finland, France, Gabon, Greece, Hungary, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Malaysia, Morocco, Mauritania, Mexico, Norway, Netherlands, Peru, Poland, Portugal, United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, Uruguay, Vietnam.

As for undergraduate students, more than 2,500 will begin their degree courses this year across the two university campuses. Classes for all courses will start on 8 September and the official opening ceremony will be held on 24 September at the Bilbao campus.

Welcome Reception for International Students in Bilbao

On 4 September, the Bilbao campus held the institutional welcome ceremony for its 494 international students. Taking part in this welcome event were the Mayor of Bilbao City Council, Juan Mari Aburto; the Director General of Culture of the Biscay Provincial Council, Begoña de Ibarra; the Vice-Rector for University Community and 2030 Agenda, Aitziber Irigoras; the Deputy to the Vice-Rector for Research and International Relations, Marian Álaez; as well as several Consuls General and Honorary Consuls based in Bilbao.

The event concluded with a lunch, after which the students had the opportunity to discover the city of Bilbao accompanied by Deusto students taking part in the Buddy Programme, a flagship initiative that pairs international students with local peers to support their integration and welcome. This institutional event is complemented by sessions with academic tutors for guidance, as well as with the International Relations Office and Deusto Campus on extracurricular activities.

Welcome Reception for International Students in San Sebastian

The San Sebastian campus will also host its institutional welcome on THURSDAY, 4 September, for 127 exchange students from 23 countries. The event, which will begin at 3:30 p.m. at the Information Desk (next to the Innogune building) with a group photo, will be attended by the Mayor of San Sebastian City Council, Eneko Goia; the Vice-Rector of the San Sebastian Campus and Institutional Relations, María José Aranguren; and the Vice-Rector for Research and International Relations, Javier Arellano.

The meeting will include a lunch in the Larramendi building at 16:45 and at 17:30 the international students will take part in a gymkhana around the city with the company Go Local, a start-up specialising in guided tours of San Sebastian.

New programmes this academic year

Among the new programmes for the coming academic year are the double degree in Communication and International Relations, the double degree in Primary Education and Early Childhood Education, and the degree in Physical Activity and Sports Science, all of which will be offered at the San Sebastian campus.
