Technology at the service of citizens. Challenges and impacts of Artificial Intelligence

Online sessions to develop a critical perspective on the impact of AI

02 June 2026

Bilbao

Artificial intelligence (AI) is often presented as a purely «technological»phenomenon, whose adoption in its current form appears unavoidable. However, behind every algorithm lie human decisions; behind every data centre, territories and affected communities; and behind every language model, people performing invisible labour. Technology is not neutral, and both its development and its applications are subject to ethical, social and political challenges.

As part of the “Technology at the Service of Citizens” project, Alboan Foundation and the University of Deusto have organised a series of four online sessions, open and free of charge, aimed at fostering a critical perspective on the impacts of AI from the standpoint of global citizenship and socio-environmental justice.

The series will feature experts from the Global North and Global South, working at the intersection of academia and activism, to address four major challenges: algorithmic bias and invisible labour (Lorena Fernández Álvarez, Deusto AI Committee), the opportunities and risks for democratic participation (Fco. Javier Martínez Contreras, Centre for Applied Ethics at Deusto, and Carlos Bajo Erro, researcher and consultant on technology and power), the socio-environmental impacts of the cloud (Marina Otero Verzier, architect and AI researcher, and Paz Peña Ochoa, consultant and researcher in digital technologies), and the challenges of AI for education systems (Marlene Villegas, International Federation of Fe y Alegría, and Amaya Arrollo Sagasta, Mondragon University).

The four sessions will take place on four consecutive Tuesdays in June (on the 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th), at the same time, from 17:00 to 18:00 in Spain / 10:00–11:00 in Colombia and Peru / 11:00–12:00 in Chile. The course will be delivered in Spanish to facilitate participation from people and organisations in Latin America.
