On 15 September, the University of Deusto and UZEI, a leading centre for Basque terminology and lexicography, signed a five-year framework collaboration agreement at the San Sebastián campus with the aim of contributing to the modernisation, standardisation and normalisation of the Basque language. The event was attended by the director of UZEI, Imanol Urbieta, and the Rector of the University of Deusto, Juan José Etxeberria SJ.

Although the University of Deusto and UZEI have collaborated on several projects over the years, this framework agreement for collaboration consolidates that partnership around two main objectives. On the one hand, the University of Deusto will strengthen its commitment to the Basque language, contributing to the standardisation of terminology in that language through its collaboration with UZEI and by promoting the use of the EUSKALTERM terminology database. Both organisations will also explore new avenues for collaboration in research aimed at modernising the Basque language, with a view to making the most of the human and material resources available while further strengthening their existing relationship.

UZEI is a non-profit organisation founded in 1977 with the aim of renewing the Basque language and developing a language suited to the modern world, enabling Basque speakers to communicate confidently and accurately in any social or professional setting. It established the EUSKALTERM terminology database, which subsequently became the public Basque terminology database. Its proposals have always followed the criteria established by the Basque Government’s Deputy Ministry for Language Policy. Through this agreement with the University of Deusto, UZEI seeks to promote terminology-related activities concerning the Basque language both in the Basque Autonomous Community and abroad, helping to disseminate knowledge and train researchers in language planning.
