Bilbao Campus
Deusto Campus celebrated its end-of-year event on Friday, 9 May, at the Ceremonial Hall, paying tribute to an academic year filled with memorable moments in the areas of faith, solidarity, ecology, culture, and sport. Over the course of the year, more than a hundred activities and initiatives were carried out, with significant participation from the entire university community.
Thus, Psychology students Carlota Pérez and Alfonso Fernández, along with Maialen López Goirigolzarri from Modern Languages, who acted as master of ceremonies, presented the event as if it were a grand movie gala, featuring protagonists of profound stories and memorable scenes, accompanied by a musical duo made up of international mobility students Martha Sonia Rivera and Isaac Hutchinson.
During the event, diplomas were awarded to the winners of the cultural competitions, the 24th edition of the Brother Garate Debate League, and those who placed in the top positions in various intra-, inter-, and extra-campus sports competitions representing Deusto. The Brother Garate trophies were also presented, serving as a special recognition for students from the university’s debate club who are concluding their academic journey by leading educational projects.
Students from the Law School Jorge Gutiérrez, Manuel Ormaza, Aroa Montero, and Miguel Alonso, along with Ane Martín, Ane Marquínez, and Jaime Sanmartín from the double degree in International Relations and Law, received their recognition from the Vice-Rector for University Community and Agenda 2030, Aitziber Irigoras. During her speech, she took the opportunity to remind everyone that 'this year, we have been pilgrims of hope—hope that is not naivety, but commitment; hope that is not escape, but action. A hope that, like great cinema, makes us imagine a different world… and drives us to build it.
During the event, Tenías que ser tú, the latest short film written and produced by the students of the film workshop throughout the semester under the direction of artist Rafa Eizaguirre, was also presented. Additionally, the student choir, directed by musician Matías Sagreras and positioned in the amphitheatre, performed a version of the well-known song “Lau teilatu” by Itoiz. As a grand finale, the Deusto cheerleading team got all the event attendees – students, faculty, and academic authorities – on their feet, followed by a cocktail event hosted by Xabier Mikel Cebada, a student from the Robotics Engineering degree programme.
Pello Azpitarte SJ, the Director of Deusto Campus, expressed that "Deusto Campus is not a set. It’s a real space where paths cross, where people are shaped, transformed…, and supported. What we've experienced has not been a fixed script, but rather an adventure with room for improvisation, with moments of vertigo, but also with memorable shots.”
Courses and training on social justice issues, solidarity experiences on the ground, workshops to deepen artistic disciplines, guided sports activities, and various competitions and gatherings with the UNIJES network are some of the initiatives that complete the holistic education of Deusto's university students.
