Last weekend of 22 and 23 September, the University of Deusto organised a Hackathon event (Hack4Elder advantAGE) bringing together more than 60 international experts and practitioners to work in a collaborative way on new solutions for a age-friendly society.
Organised in the framework of the Bizkaia Silver Week, in association with the 2018 AAL Forum, Hack4Elder advantAGE offered a space to share and propose new ideas and solutions on how to release the elderly’s full potential and added value in society.
Participants of diverse profiles (designers, developers, entrepreneurs, researchers, healthcare professionals, elderly people…) from all over Europe came out with both innovative technology and non-technology solutions and business models to help the elderly release their full potential and added value in society as a measure of integration in their communities. In addition, 16 renowned international experts participated in the event giving fresh and inspiring ideas, suggestions and recommendations to help participants moving forward in their project ideas and encouraging the set-up of a true space of co-creation.
As a result, seven innovative solutions came out. They addressed the challenges of personal autonomy and independent living, sustainable and inclusive care, inclusion of the elderly in society, training and coaching on Assisted Active Learning, and social enterprises involving the elderly.
Three of these solutions received the Hack4Elder advantAGE Awards, which were awarded to the most promising solutions of intergenerational, international and intersectorial nature:
- 1st Prize: TOGETHER - a project aimed at improving social services through telecare (an app and chatbot);
- 2nd Prize: ‘20-75’ - an intergenerational cohousing social business;
- 3rd Prize: ‘JOIN ME APP’ - a training and coaching app for assisted active learning, care and inclusion
