23 October 2026
KM Kulturunea Auditorium, Convento de Santa Teresa (Elbira Zipitria, 1-Donostia).
The screen does more than reflect history; it also plays a decisive role in shaping collective memory of the conflicts that leave their mark on a society. Understanding how films, documentaries and television series have portrayed ETA terrorism is essential to analysing the cultural, political and ethical changes experienced in the Basque Country and throughout Spain.
The book La memoria en las pantallas. El terrorismo en el cine y la televisión, written by researchers María Pilar Rodríguez (University of Deusto) and María Marcos Ramos (University of Salamanca), examines how film and television have helped shape collective memory of ETA terrorism and its impact on Basque and Spanish society. Drawing on a wide range of films, documentaries, television series and other television productions, the book traces the evolution of audiovisual narratives, from early portrayals shaped by historical proximity and political upheaval to contemporary works focusing on victims, coexistence and reconciliation.
