Juan José Poza, neurologist and professor at the University of Deusto, receives the SEN Epilepsy Award for his scientific work

The Spanish Society of Neurology recognises his outstanding achievements in research, teaching and clinical practice

Juan José Poza Aldea, neurologist and professor on the Medicine degree at the University of Deusto, has been awarded the SEN Epilepsy Award by the Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN), a distinction recognising his extensive scientific work and his dedication to research into this neurological condition.

The SEN Awards represent the highest distinction conferred by the Spanish neurology community on individuals or organisations that have made a significant contribution to scientific development and to the advancement of neurology in Spain. During the award ceremony, Dr Jesús Porta-Etessam, President of the Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN), stated that the award had been granted to Dr Poza “for having promoted numerous scientific and educational activities, both throughout his professional career and during his time as coordinator of the SEN working groups on sleep, neuromuscular diseases and epilepsy.”

Clinical care, research and teaching

Dr Poza works as a specialist physician at Donostia University Hospital. He combines this clinical work with extensive research and teaching activity, currently serving as a lecturer on the Medicine degree programme at the University of Deusto. A graduate in Medicine and Surgery and holder of a PhD in Medicine from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), Poza has an academic record that reflects a continuous commitment to dissemination and academic rigour: he is the author of 113 scientific articles in national and international journals, as well as more than 30 books and specialist book chapters. He has been involved in around 40 projects, studies and clinical trials, both as principal investigator and as a collaborator. He has also participated in around 200 national and international conferences, delivering presentations and papers.

Within the SEN, Juan José Poza has held responsibilities including coordinator of the Study Groups on Sleep-Wake Disorders, Epilepsy and Neuromuscular Diseases, as well as serving as Technical Director for Accreditation of the Society.
