The event, which opened with a welcome address by our Dean, Nuria Ortiz, became a
key forum for bringing together academic staff and the third sector to identify biases and
enrich health education from an intersectional perspective.
These were some of the key moments from the session:
➔ Professor Julio Gómez Cañedo (coordinator of the Palliative Care Unit
at San Juan de Dios Hospital in Santurtzi) opened the discussion by addressing
bereavement support and the need to personalise care in line with
each patient’s identity.
➔ Representatives from leading organisations such as Kale Dor Kayiko, the Ellacuría Foundation
and ZEHAR errefuxiatuekin shared their experiences to highlight the stereotypes
and prejudices that still persist within the healthcare sector. The working groups
concluded with three clear pillars: the need to develop
communication and empathy skills, the importance of avoiding overgeneralisation and simplistic explanations, and
a firm commitment to integrating diversity into the academic curriculum.
➔ The event was rounded off by Jazmín Marie Algarín García (a researcher at Deusto
PsychoSocial), whose presentation, «Hablemos de lo que no se habla: Cuando el
sistema de salud nos ignora o no está diseñado para nosotrxs», she strongly denounced
the invisible barriers and structural racism that affect the most
vulnerable groups.
We will continue working and learning to prepare healthcare professionals who
stand out not only for their technical excellence, but also for their sensitivity and commitment to
social justice.
