Mikel Maiza Galparsoro completed his degree in Automation and Industrial Electronics at Mondragon Unibertsitatea in 2000. In 2003, he was awarded a PhD by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport for his doctoral thesis, “Automatic scheduling and parallel code generation for high-performance real-time systems”, carried out at the University of York (United Kingdom). After several years working in engineering firms and setting up his own business, he has been part of the research team at the Department of Data Intelligence for Energy and the Environment at the Vicomtech Technology Centre since 2016. Since 2023, he is a Principal Researcher and head of the “Data Intelligence for the Environment” research line, and since 2025 he is also a Lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Deusto. Throughout his professional career, he has led and participated in various industrial and R&D&I projects at regional, national and European level, having published numerous scientific articles in journals and conference proceedings, as well as registering patents. He was also an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of the Basque Country during the 2015–2016 and 2016–2017 academic years, and worked as a Visiting Lecturer at the Ecole Supérieure des Technologies Industrielles Avancées (ESTIA) between 2017 and 2024. His research interests include parallel processing systems, heuristic algorithms and stochastic mathematical optimisation techniques (genetic algorithms, ant colony optimisation, simulated annealing, tabu search) and artificial intelligence techniques (machine learning, deep learning, classification, clustering, regression, LLMs, agents, etc.) for the construction of stochastic models of processes and systems, and their application to pattern recognition, machine learning, early fault detection and the simulation of processes and systems.
