On 1 and 2 October, the University of Deusto is hosting the lecture "El cuento del machismo o el machismo de los cuentos", by Macarena Baena, a journalist specialising in feminism and sexist violence. In the lecture, organised by the Government Delegation in the Basque Country, she explored the phenomenon of gender-based violence denial, examining how it manifests in today’s society and its main consequences.

To illustrate this, using clear and relatable examples, the expert highlighted how girls and boys are socialised from an early age under gender stereotypes and roles that create inequalities and lay the foundations for structural violence.

In this regard, the talk aims to provide tools to identify everyday dynamics, often overlooked, and to encourage a critical perspective that recognises how inequality begins almost from birth. In her talk, the expert will also address issues related to sexual violence, current legislation, and topics on the prevention and detection of gender-based violence, as well as co-education.

Efeminista

Macarena Baena Garrido holds a degree in Journalism from the Complutense University of Madrid (1993) and has been working at the Efe Agency for more than three decades. Since 2020, she has led Efeminista, the agency’s multimedia Equality project, which aims to protect the human rights of women and girls, combat gender-based violence, and raise the profile of female role models in society.

The first session took place on 1 October, in the Auditorium of the Bilbao campus. It featured Carlos García, Deputy Government Representative in Biscay; Juan José Etxeberria, Rector of the University of Deusto; and Aitziber Irigoras, Vice-Rector for the University Community and Agenda 2030.

The second session will take place on 2 October, at the same time, in the Loiola Centrum on the San Sebastian campus, and will be attended by Marisol Garmendia, Government Delegate in the Basque Country, along with Vice-Rector Aitziber Irigoras.
