The White Night will fill the University of Deusto with light and Basque music

Next 14 June, the cloister of the University of Deusto will be hosting a number of shows performed by Basque artists. The countdown to a magical night.

This event will be held on 14 June from 20:30 to 00:00, in the cloister of the University. A wide range of performers representing different aspects of the Basque culture will to take part in the whitest and most magical night of the year, coinciding with Bilbao’s anniversary celebration. Together, they will perform the show ‘Desde las raices. Txalap.art’.

20:30-22:30 The programme will start with Gure musikari handiak, a group made up of Basque musicians who will be performing a street show that recovers some of the leading figures of Basque folk music who left a highly-valued cultural legacy and represent Basque tradition.

21:00-23:00 The Demode Quartet will present their new show, ‘Epa! , full of original a cappella versions of Itoiz, Lertxundi and Lete, and will be accompanied by delightful choreographies and witty dialogues.

21:30-23:30 Dantzas konpania will come next. Its twelve dancers will be performing a specific show for the White Night, making the audience part of their show.

22:00-00:00 The gem of the White Night at the University of Deusto will come from the show ‘Jainko txiki eta jostalari hura’ , which combines the poetry of writer Kirmen Uribe, the music of Mikel Urdangarin, Rafa Rueda and Bingen Mendizabal, and the illustrations of Mikel Valverde.

Other venues

Other venues that will be hosting the White Night include: the Fine Arts Museum, the Basque Museum, the Maritime Museum, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, St. Jacques Cathedral, St. Nicholas Church, the Olabarri Palace, Alhóndiga Bilbao, Arriaga Theatre, the Town Hall and Biscay’s Regional Council Palace. Their participation is key to the good running of all the activities scheduled for 14 June in the evening.

The play of light and colour will turn the city into an urban kaleidoscope, where buildings will be transformed and will take the most varied and diverse forms.

This year’s show will also have its focus on light. Patrice Warrener, the Italian company De Cagna Iluminaire, Logela Multimedia, the British company Aether & Hemera and the creative studio ‘Nueveojos’ have created the designs for this special night in which their artistic proposals will shine out as never before.

Bilbao’s streets will also be transformed into parade routes for street theatre groups.
The programme for all performances will be available from Tuesday, 10 June, at the Fundación Bilbao 700 office (Ensanche Building, Plaza del Ensanche, no. 11, 1st floor) and the Tourism Offices.

03. Art and Culture of Japan (exhibitions)

Coinciding with the ‘Arte japonés y japonismo’ exhibition that is being held at the Fine Arts Museum by the House of Japan, five rituals of the Japanese culture are presented in the different exhibition rooms at the museum. The members of the public attending the exhibition will be able to know first-hand about the Kimono Ceremony, taste tea, learn calligraphy with Indian ink and brush, do Origami (paper folding) and make Ikebana (flower arranging).

05. García Lorca by Ángela Molina

Poetry recital by actress Ángela Molina accompanied by two musicians (guitar and percussion). Supported in her personal voice and acting force, the eldest of the Molina family will recite García Lorca’s poems, especially “Gypsy Ballads”, creating an atmosphere full of excitement and sensitivity.
