Javier García Zubía, Professor of Computer Architecture and Technology at the University of Deusto, has been awarded the Ramón Llull Award in the 2026 edition of the Research Awards organised by the Spanish Computer Science Society (SCIE) and the BBVA Foundation. The jury recognised his outstanding career in educational innovation and his contribution to democratising access to computing.
García Zubía leads WebLab-Deusto, a pioneering international initiative that enables students worldwide to programme and interact remotely with real hardware and digital systems. This system removes the need for costly physical equipment, facilitating learning even in resource-constrained contexts, such as rural areas.
The SCIE–BBVA Foundation Awards, promoted by the computer science research community since 2009, aim to recognise the work of researchers and organisations that contribute to the development, strengthening and dissemination of this discipline. They are structured into two categories: the National Computer Science Awards, which recognise established careers, and the Young Computer Science Researchers Awards, which focus on innovative doctoral research and supporting the next generation of researchers.
This award highlights the importance of García Zubía’s contributions to educational innovation and demonstrates the commitment of the awarding institutions to promoting accessible, inclusive and excellent computer science.
