The Pedro Arrupe Human Rights Institute is pleased to announce the successful completion of the final cohort of the training programme in Human Rights for Indigenous Peoples, held from 5 May to 20 June on the Bilbao campus of the University of Deusto.

This initiative, organised jointly with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), was made possible thanks to funding from the Basque Agency for Development Cooperation (eLankidetza).

This year's group, made up of indigenous leaders from various Latin American countries, received specialised training aimed at strengthening the defence of collective rights and the protection of human rights and their territories.

This year’s participants included:

  • Ángela Uzuna Bobarin, Ayllu Jesús de Machaca Community Association (Bolivia)
  • Dayana Urzola Domicó, Cabildo Mayor Embera Katío of the Quebrada Cañaveral Río San Jorge Reservation (Colombia)
  • Diego Petzey Quiejú, Ritz'balil C'aslemal Community Association (Guatemala)
  • Olga Rodríguez Palacio, Local Congress of the Ngäbe Buglé Region (Panama)
  • Palmira Flores García, Triqui Community of San Luis Potosí (Mexico)
  • Paula Mercedes Alvarado, Tres Ombúes Community (Argentina)

  • Tamara Daniela Quiroga, Amaicha del Valle Indigenous Community (Argentina)
  • Zeidy Brukwä Rodríguez Guerra, National Front of Indigenous Peoples – FRENAPI (Costa Rica)

Their time in Bilbao offered a unique opportunity to share knowledge, build collaborative networks, and strengthen capacities that contribute to transformative social processes in support of indigenous peoples across Latin America.
