Physiotherapy students at the University of Deusto assist participants at the finish line of the Zegama-Aizkorri mountain race

The 25th edition of the Zegama-Aizkorri race, held on 15 and 17 May, featured the participation of Physiotherapy students from the University of Deusto. This trail running event is known for its epic and symbolic character, extending beyond the purely sporting dimension thanks to a combination of effort, mist, mud, and the involvement of the entire local community.

In previous editions, the involvement of the Faculty of Education and Sport in this event had already been highlighted, with Itziar Urquijo as one of the main researchers on the race and its sporting and social significance.

On this occasion, Physiotherapy students focused on assisting participants at the end of the race, both in the vertical kilometre on Friday and in the marathon on Sunday. The treatments provided by Deusto’s future physiotherapists helped alleviate overuse and strain resulting from a competition widely regarded by much of the trail-running community as “the best trail race in the world”.

Together with Professor Javier Romero, the following provided support at the finish line: Ismene Aguirre Olea, Saioa Álvarez Zarraoa, Naroa Arretxe Unzue, Joanes Arrizabalaga Albizu, Joanes Etxabe Etxeburua, Adur Fernández Caminos, Enara Jauregi Lorenzo, Malen Luis Amonarraiz, Eneko Mariño Apezteguía, Uxue Odriozola Zarauz and Anartz Ramallo Iparragirre.
