NOHA Master's Board meets in Dublin

21 March 2023

Bilbao Campus

University College Dublin was the venue for the NOHA Master’s in International Humanitarian Action Board meeting in early March.

The meeting was attended by all the universities that make up the Consortium (Aix-Marseille Université (France), L-Università ta' Malta (Malta), Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (Netherlands), Ruhr-Universität Bochum (Germany), University of Deusto (Spain), University College Dublin (Ireland), Uniwersytet Warszawski (Poland) and Uppsala universitet (Sweden), Uniwersytet Warszawski (Poland) and Uppsala universitet (Sweden). During the meeting, a number of issues were discussed, most notably the selection of the Erasmus Mundus grant holders for the 2023-25 programme, a process that has attracted more than 800 applications for admission from around the world.

The status of applications from current Master's students to study their third semester at one of the programme's partner universities was also updated. These include Gadjah Mada (Indonesia), Chiang Mai (Thailand), Tata Institute of Social Sciences (India), Fordham University (USA), German Jordanian University (Jordan), Rafael Landivar (Guatemala), Universidad Pontificia Javeriana de Bogotá (Colombia), International Christian University (Japan), Deakin University (Australia), Makeni University (Sierra Leone) and DOHA Institute for Graduate Studies (Qatar).

The NOHA Master's degree is the first global initiative to respond to the growing need for higher education qualifications specifically designed to address complex humanitarian emergencies. It was created with this aim in 1993 as a result of the actions agreed with the NOHA network (Network in Humanitarian Action / Red de Acción Humanitaria) in close cooperation with two Directorates-General of the European Commission: the Directorate-General for Humanitarian Aid (ECHO) and the Directorate-General for Education and Culture. In September 2004, the European Commission chose the NOHA Master’s programme as one of the leading Erasmus Mundus Master's programmes.

To mark the 30th anniversary of the Master's programme, an international conference entitled “Reflections on 30 years of Humanitarian action and some prospects of the future” will be held at Aix-Marseille Université in France in November.  In turn, the University of Deusto will be holding a local celebration to which the alumni, professors and organisations that have collaborated and continue to collaborate with the programme will be invited on 20 October.
