The University of Deusto embraces diversity and reaffirms the value of being oneself on the International LGBTI+ Pride Day (June 28)
The University joins this commemoration through an awareness-raising initiative promoted by the Diversity Unit, which will include the distribution of rainbow stickers and bracelets across the Bilbao and San Sebastián campuses.
On the occasion of the International LGBTI+ Pride Day, celebrated every June 28, the University of Deusto, through its Diversity Unit, reaffirms its commitment to rights, diversity, and equality, promoting a safe, inclusive, and discrimination-free university environment.
This date commemorates the uprising that took place on June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn bar, located in the Greenwich Village neighbourhood of New York, known for being a regular meeting place for the LGBTI+ community.
At that time, homosexuality was still illegal in many parts of the United States, and police raids on establishments such as this were common. However, during the early hours of June 28, officers carried out particularly aggressive raids and arrested anyone suspected of being homosexual. As a result, people took to the streets in protest, giving rise to the first Pride march.
A symbolic action on campus
Under the slogan “Embracing Diversity: the Pride of Being You”, the University will carry out an awareness-raising activity on June 24 and 25, from 09:00 to 13:00, distributing rainbow stickers and bracelets across the following spaces:
- Bilbao Campus: Diversity Unit
- San Sebastián Campus: Deusto Campus
The University encourages the entire university community to come and collect their rainbow symbol of love, diversity, equity, and inclusion. At Deusto, we live, share, and celebrate diversity.
