17 November 2025
Bilbao Campus San Sebastian Campus
The University of Deusto will commemorate the martyrs of the Central American University (UCA) of El Salvador on 17 November: six Jesuits and two women who were murdered in 1989 for their commitment to justice, peace, and truth. Their testimony continues to be a symbol of hope and fidelity to the mission for our Jesuit universities.
On this anniversary, a prayer service will be held at 13:00 in the Gothic Chapel on the Bilbao campus, led by Jesuit novices, to honour the martyrs and their legacy of faith and commitment to university life. On the San Sebastian campus, there will also be a prayer service at 13:00 in the Antxieta Chapel.
Additionally, from 15:30 to 16:45 in the Churruca Room on the Bilbao campus, there will be a discussion with Fátima Peña from UCA, who is currently in Bilbao and will share how the Salvadoran university continues to live out its mission in the country’s current context. It will also be possible to follow the event online. Registration for the seminar is required via the following link.
Fátima Peña holds a degree in Social Communication and a master’s in Political Science from the José Simeón Cañas Central American University (UCA). She currently serves as Coordinator of Liaison for Advocacy in the Vice-Rectorate for Social Engagement at UCA and as a lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Political Science at the same university. From 2013 to 2016 she worked as a journalist. Her research interests include economic and political elites, environmental conflicts, and political regime transitions.
