Thousands of visitors have embraced Basque culture at the Durangoko Azoka, a celebration that, in its 60th edition, is more vibrant than ever and remains particularly youthful, with two-thirds of visitors under the age of 45. Held from 5 to 8 December, this historic event has not only highlighted six decades of its history but also laid the foundations for the future under its new permanent motto: "Kulturaren Jaialdia”.
As in previous years, the University of Deusto had its own stand, where four new publications were presented alongside a collection of more than 40 titles in Basque or related to Basque language and culture. On this occasion, the event concluded with a highly satisfactory outcome, marked by a significant increase in book sales compared with previous years. Among the most popular titles were José Ramón Scheifler, el profesor que enseñaba a pensar, the major release of 2025; Los mitos vascos, a classic that continues to attract new readers at the Azoka year after year; and Mil años de historia vasca.
Beyond the particular success of the university, the general data of the fair show an optimistic scenario for Basque culture. According to the study carried out by Siadeco, the Fair has a loyal public - 90% repeat annually - but, mainly, it continues to attract new generations, which confirms that the model has a bright future.
The success of two initiatives such as the Ikasle Goiza (with students from all over the Basque Country filling workshops) and the Gazte Eztanda on Saturday shows that cultural transmission is assured. The organisers highlighted the “outstanding attitude” of visitors and the large turnout, which filled both the Landako pavilion and the concert and evening activity spaces.
