How can research and education help us respond to the challenges of the energy transition and environmental protection? To tackle this challenge, the University of Deusto and Iberdrola have signed a framework agreement for collaboration to promote joint initiatives in the field of knowledge generation and transfer, thereby consolidating their shared commitment to scientific, technological and social progress.

Through this agreement, both organisations will promote the joint development of applied research projects at both national and international level. Among the priority areas of work, particular emphasis is placed on the study and implementation of advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, big data analytics and quantum computing, as well as key areas of economic and business management (innovation, internationalisation, risk management, financing and sustainability).

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the electricity sector, making power grids more efficient, safer and more sustainable. Thanks to AI, it is possible to anticipate incidents, optimise resources and integrate renewable energy on a large scale, thereby contributing to decarbonisation and economic development. Artificial intelligence is becoming a strategic tool for accelerating the transformation of the electricity sector. Its application to grid management is helping to create more efficient, safer and more sustainable systems that can better respond to the needs of households, businesses and public administrations.

Iberdrola, Europe’s leading electricity company and the world’s second-largest by market capitalisation, recognises that, through the use of smart technologies, electricity companies can anticipate potential incidents, optimise the use of available resources and improve the reliability of supply. This results in a more stable, efficient and competitive service for citizens and businesses. A clear example of this is that the company’s global Smart Grids Innovation Hub is based in Bilbao, in collaboration with the Provincial Council of Biscay.

AI also plays a key role in the fight against climate change. By enabling better planning and operation of electricity systems, it helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency and facilitate the large-scale integration of renewable energy sources.

These capabilities make artificial intelligence a key factor in driving an orderly energy transition, strengthening resilience to the impacts of climate change and creating new opportunities for sustainable economic development.

The agreement also covers the joint completion of Undergraduate Final Year Projects (TFG), Master’s Dissertations (TFM), doctoral theses and case studies focusing on the energy sector; the promotion of work placements, with particular emphasis on incorporating dual education to familiarise students with the realities of the sector; the organisation of training and outreach events; and the establishment of training centres and specific Chairs in areas of mutual interest and with ethical or social impact.

For Rector Juan José Etxeberria, this agreement reinforces the University of Deusto’s commitment to putting science, technology and innovation at the service of people, justice and the sustainable development of our region. “Working with a leading company such as Iberdrola will enable us to accelerate knowledge transfer in key areas such as Artificial Intelligence and the green transition, while also supporting and fostering our students’ talent through practical and dual education models that directly connect academic activity with the business and industrial sectors and the real needs of society,” he said.

For his part, Asís Canales, Iberdrola’s institutional representative in the Basque Country and Director of Resources and Services for the Iberdrola Group, highlighted the importance of the agreement for future generations: “The deployment of Artificial Intelligence across electricity grids requires talent capable of combining technological expertise with a commitment to sustainability. Professionals specialising in data, automation, cybersecurity and systems operation will be key to turning the potential of AI into real-world solutions that improve the efficiency, safety and resilience of the electricity system.”
