Fourth-year medicine students at the University of Deusto will provide health advice to the university community on arterial hypertension, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and alcohol consumption on 21 and 22 May in the cloisters and corridors of the Bilbao campus.
This Health Prevention and Promotion Workshop is organised by the Faculty of Health Sciences as part of the subject Caring for the Life of the Person: Family and Community Medicine and Palliative Care. Over the two days, from 10:00 to 12:00, a total of 80 students will take part in the initiative, with 40 participating each day and 20 based in each cloister, accompanied by a member of teaching staff. Their aim will be to provide health advice on arterial hypertension, sexually transmitted infections and alcohol consumption. This follows preparatory work involving a literature review and the development of information materials.
Future doctors
The workshop, which will see 40 future doctors taking part on each day by measuring blood pressure, providing information and engaging with members of the university community, has been designed as a University Outreach initiative that connects the University with society. It offers practical experience beyond the classroom and enables students to engage with real-world settings.
“It is rewarding and educational to see them putting their abilities, skills and communication talents into practice, engaging with people in the cloisters and corridors in their future role as carers of others. As doctors, that is ultimately what we are, and what we aspire to be, and that is no small thing,” explains Gaizka Camarón, a lecturer on the Medicine degree.
