On the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, celebrated each year on 11 February, the University of Deusto reaffirms its commitment to a fairer, more inclusive, and transformative approach to science. This day, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly, serves as a reminder of the need to make women's contribution to science and technology more visible and to tackle persistent structural inequalities.

In Spain, women make up 40% of research staff; however, in fields such as engineering and technology, their representation does not reach 15%. In response to this situation, shaped by structural barriers and stereotypes, the University of Deusto has organised the session on its Bilbao and San Sebastian campuses: "Be an Engineering student for a day!” This activity is part of the "Emakumeak Zientzian" initiative.

In this context, the San Sebastian campus (6 February) and the Bilbao campus (11 February) opened their doors to women over 55. Participants attended workshops on Artificial Intelligence and Virtual and Augmented Reality, explored projects developed by students from the Faculty of Engineering, and, in the case of Bilbao, visited the Deusto FabLab.

“Because breaking stereotypes has no age and creating role models is a collective responsibility,” the University works to build inclusive and safe academic environments. The institution continues to promote genuine equality of opportunity, based on the principle that “investing in women and girls in science is investing in the future.”

Emakumeak Zientzian is a collective initiative promoted by 34 organisations within the science and technology network of the Basque Country. Its aim is to highlight women’s contributions in the scientific field, break gender stereotypes, and encourage scientific vocations among younger generations. The project, launched in 2017, organises an extensive annual programme of activities for girls and boys, families, and the general public. The purpose of these events is not only to share knowledge, but also to generate questions, inspire attitudes, and open new perspectives that foster interest in science and critical thinking.
