The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Deusto has joined the European SOCIAREM project, co-financed by the Horizon Europe programme and the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research, and Innovation (SERI), with the aim of accelerating the adoption of photovoltaic systems and promoting citizen energy communities across Europe.
The SOCIAREM project, which will officially kick off with the consortium meeting on 2 and 3 October in Madrid, brings together 15 partners from 9 countries, including universities, research centres, SMEs and civil society organisations. With a duration of 42 months (October 2025 - March 2029) and a total budget of 5.57 million euros, SOCIAREM will address the social, regulatory, technical and economic barriers that still limit the expansion of solar energy.
The University of Deusto’s contribution
Deusto’s Faculty of Engineering, with 50 years of experience training professionals in various branches of engineering and more than 10,000 graduates working in companies and international organisations, will take part in the project by contributing its expertise in applied research and technology transfer. Through DeustoTech, the university’s technological research centre, digital tools and services will be developed to facilitate the adoption of photovoltaic systems. These will include gamification strategies for energy education, open models for energy communities, and independent guides for consumers, while maintaining close dialogue with regulatory authorities to streamline administrative processes.
Research, innovation and social commitment
SOCIAREM combines research, technology and citizen participation to promote innovative clean energy solutions. The project includes training workshops, the development of an educational video game and direct collaboration with energy communities in different countries, with the aim of increasing social acceptance of renewable energies and generating sustainable and replicable business models.
The University of Deusto's participation in SOCIAREM reflects its institutional commitment to innovation, sustainability and social impact, in line with its mission to train highly qualified professionals and promote the economic, social and technological development of society. The University has campuses in Bilbao and San Sebastian, sites in Vitoria and Madrid, and around 12,000 students, of which approximately 15% come from 50 different countries.
