Speaking before a large audience, the President of the Basque Professional Society of Labour Relations Graduates, Bartolomé Aristegui, highlighted the social role of future Labour Relations graduates.
Graduates in Labour Relations foster social well-being, modern justice and equality, above all among the most vulnerable members of society, according to Aristegui.
This professional field is not widely known, he stated, as there are still difficulties when defining it. Nevertheless, “professional practice involves a lot of management tasks because the sphere of competences is very broad, as well as the range of career opportunities. Some examples are competitive exams for the Administration or the world of academics.
This session was held to provide information to future students and their families about the new Bachelor’s degree in Labour Relations and the double Bachelor’s degree in Law + Labour Relations that the University of Deusto will offer in the 2015/2016 academic year. The President of the Basque professional body gave a talk entitled "Career opportunities for graduates of the Bachelor's degree in Labour Relations. Professional practice of Labour Relations" at the University of Deusto.
He underscored that Labour Relations professionals are essential for proper internal management of firms and intervention in problem-solving between the different groups. Their global vision of the entire social and business fabric equips them to mediate, assess, negotiate… with all the parties involved.
Labour Relations is one of the career opportunities for these graduates, stated the University of Deusto coordinator of these programmes, Javier Arrieta, who attended the event.
Arrieta also pointed out that the curriculum for the programme was designed by experts from Law and Labour Relations as it combines and ties in with both disciplines.
Alipio García Ross, Vice President of the Biscay Professional Society of Labour Relations Graduates, also gave a talk. García Ross pointed out that Labour Relations graduates are equipped to offer assistance in the Supreme Court. He stated that work is now being done to enable them to intervene in judicial reviews, the last legal competence pending.
In contrast to Law graduates, Labour Relations graduates can practise immediately upon finishing their degree studies.
Although their activity may go largely unnoticed, he stated that “they play a key role in SMEs where they not only prepare payrolls and social security but also handle taxes. They share legal and economic responsibilities and are equipped to run Human Resources Departments.”
He stated that the Basque business fabric is distinctive for its culture of conflict, meaning that Labour Relations experts play a key role. “Since the start of the crisis, the demand for work in our sector has increased 40%", he said.
