Thus, the University of Deusto anticipated the implementation of the Act that regulates the sale, supply and advertising of tobacco products. This Act, effective since January 2006, restricts smoking, particularly in teaching centres and workplaces. To this respect, the University of Deusto prohibits smoking in closed spaces. Therefore, smoking is prohibited in all campus buildings in Bilbao and San Sebastian, including the two cloisters in the Main Building on Bilbao campus. As for coffee bars, smoking is also banned. This measure, framed within the campaign carried out by the Vice-Rector's office for Student Affairs, in collaboration with the Deusto Institute of Drug Dependencies, aims to restrict smoking to designated areas only, and to avoid the consumption of other substances. Therefore, it seeks to foster the social norm of not smoking, and to make the university community aware of the need to reduce and stop smoking, thus complying with a firm and well-defined institutional commitment. This policy is aimed both at academic and non-academic staff in the University and at students. This campaign for tobacco prevention was started with an epidemiological survey among the whole university community in order to know the current level of consumption and their awareness regarding not smoking. Later, an informative campaign has been carried out and areas clearly marked with signs. The next step now is the smoking restriction to very specific areas. Similarly, all cigarette vending machines and all kinds of advertising on both campuses of the University of Deusto (Bilbao and San Sebastian) have been removed. These measures also include support to all those who want to stop smoking by providing them with specific treatments and talks.
