On 1 October, the Department of Science, Universities, and Innovation of the Basque Government held the first Jakindari meeting, the new alliance for scientific culture, which has already been joined by more than 60 organisations from the Basque Science, Technology, and Innovation Network (RVCT), as well as other leading organisations in knowledge dissemination within the Basque Autonomous Community (CAV). Among these organisations is the University of Deusto, represented by María Luz Guenaga and Ladislas Bizimana. Both took part, along with representatives from other institutions, in the event held at the Olatua building in Getxo.

Jakindari is an initiative within the Department’s Project for the Social Dissemination of Knowledge, aimed at strengthening the presence of science in the public sphere, raising citizens’ scientific literacy, fostering the connection between science and Basque society, promoting the use of Basque in outreach activities, and ensuring inclusive dissemination to reduce social gaps in access to knowledge.

The new alliance aims to foster greater collaboration among its participants, leveraging their strengths and capabilities to achieve greater synergies and thus generate greater social impact, accessing a wider and more diverse audience. It also aims to contribute to greater efficiency through the sharing of resources and knowledge among the actors involved. In this regard, collaboration between stakeholders will drive innovation and creativity, and will help strengthen the public presence of science with a more unified and visible image.

In his speech, Councillor Juan Ignacio Pérez Iglesias thanked the organisations for joining the alliance. He emphasised that the main objective “is to combine the efforts of the different stakeholders to bring scientific knowledge to all areas of our territory, promoting joint activities and the exchange of best practices. And thus give greater visibility and social prestige to science in a context of increasing misinformation”.

Universities and research centres

Among the entities that have joined Jakindari are universities, cooperative research centres (CIC), research centres of excellence (BERC), members of the Basque Research and Technology Alliance (BRTA), foundations, museums, cultural centres and creative and communication companies, among others.

During the event, held under the motto “Crew for the Dissemination of Science,” the organisations that joined Jakindari were able to share experiences, exchange best practices, and learn about successful initiatives such as Barcelona Ciencia Innovación and the Fundación Descubre, among others.

Organisations that are part of Jakindari will be able to participate in a series of initiatives designed by the Department to boost their outreach activities. One of the main tools is the digital platformZientziaKlik, which brings together the outreach activities offered by the scientific and technological community, facilitates public access to scientific events and resources, and promotes collaboration among stakeholders.

The Department of Science, Universities and Innovation will also launch a call for financial aid to co-finance projects for the social dissemination of knowledge. It will also organise a prize competition to recognise the most outstanding projects promoted by the organisations that make up Jakindari.
