In May 2006, a delegation from the University of Deusto visited SUFE in Shanghai, where the first contacts were made with this prestigious university.Then, in November 2007, a delegation of five members, headed by Chairman Tan Min, visited the San Sebastian campus to deepen the mutual knowledge between both universities.Apart from José Mari Guibert, Vice-Rector of the San Sebastian campus, other participants in this visit included: the Vice-Rector for Business, Ramón O'Callaghan, the Dean of ESTE faculty, Víctor Urcelay, the Vice-Dean of ESTE faculty, Irene Cuesta, the Director of the Centre of Modern Languages Marga Otaegi, the Director of International Relations at the Faculty of Humanities, María Pilar Rodríguez, the Coordinator of International Relations at ESTE faculty, Elena Lamarain, the Coordinator of UD International Relations, Kevin Villanueva, and Lorea Narbaiza, Foreign Student Coordinator at ESTE faculty.
The student exchange agreement will start in the 2009-2010 academic year. This means that students at the San Sebastian campus will have the opportunity to spend one academic semester in Shanghai, where they will study a number of different subjects at this Chinese University.On the other hand, students of the aforementioned university will also be welcomed to the San Sebastian campus, which will contribute to mutual knowledge and enrichment.In addition, this will provide an invaluable opportunity to explore in greater depth the Chinese culture and languages, which are being learnt by an increasingly large number of university students.
Bearing in mind the growing interest both in Chinese language and in this country?s culture, the UD campus in San Sebastian has been offering Mandarin Chinese courses since 2005.Therefore, this agreement will help students to supplement their education at UD with that acquired in the Asian country, whose weight in the world economy is growing.All in all, the University of Deusto is aware of the increasing need of professionals, trained to understand and perform well in the most populated country in the world. Therefore, it is taking steps to train future business people and executives in the best possible way.
Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE)
Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE) was established in 1917, and it is under the direct admnistration of the Ministry of Education. This university institution is mainly focused on business administration and management, trade, finance and economics.It reaches the highest A++ grades in these fields, and it is considered one of the best universities in these disciplines.
The university is located in the northeasten part of Shanghai?s urban district, covering an area of 409,700 square metres. The university has over 700 academic staff, 300 of whom are professors and associate professors.During the last few years, it has promoted multidisciplinary collaboration and new lecturers have been recruited.During the last few years, SUFE has focused on economics, finance and business administration and management, for which it is renowned.But in its effort to be a multidisciplinary university, it has the following Faculties:Accounting, Finance, International Business Administration and Management, Law, Humanities, Information Management and Engineering as well as the Department of Statistics, Department of Foreign Languages, Department of Applied Mathematics, MBA School, the School of International Cultural Exchange, the Institute of International Professional Training, and the International Education College.
During the last few years, SUFE has organised or co-organised a large number of congresses, seminars and academic presentations, 40 of which were high-level international congresses.SUFE is increasingly encouraging its academic staff and students to travel abroad and take part in international academic programmes.In the past, over 115 lecturers went to countries like Japan, Korea, Australia, USA or UK to participate in congresses.
Since 1996, it has offered a wide range of joint MBA, executive MBA and undergraduate programmes. With the aim of introducing educational resources of excellence from its university partners, SUFE has invited over 130 long-term foreign lecturers and recruited lecturers who obtained their Doctoral Thesis from renowned universities such as Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Cornell, or the University of Toronto.They play an importan role both in teaching and research.
Since its creation, SUFE has mainly focused on international exchange and cooperation.Up to April 2007, SUFE has signed 103 cooperation agreements with foreign universities across five continents.Some of these coutries include: USA, the UK, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, France, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Japan, Vietnam, and some institutions in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.These agreements seek to promote research collaboration, the development of joint programmes, and student and academic staff exchange. At present, SUFE welcomes exchange students from over 64 countries.In addition, over 100 SUFE students are sent on exchange programmes to different destinations every year.
