The University of Deusto hosts a Conference on Peace and Aims of the Millennium

On 21, 22 and 23 January, the University of Deusto is hosting a Conference entitled 'Peace in pursuance of the Aims of the Millennium'. This conference has been organised by the APY Foundation for Cooperation-Solidarity in Action, and it will be held at the Padre Arrupe Institute of Human Rights. Topics to be discussed include those related to the new strategies to reduce poverty in Latin America, the worsening of hunger and climate change, as well as the access and control of natural resources.News

The first round table entitled ?Las nuevas estrategias de reducción de la pobreza en América Latina: Venezuela, Bolivia y Ecuador: Retos y oportunidades', was held last 21 January. Speakers included: Rubén Martínez, from the University of Valencia, and Alberto Montero and Francisco Calderón, both from the University of Malaga.The second round tablefocused on the topic 'Agroenergía vs Soberanía Alimentaria: agudización del hambre y del Cambio Climático', was held on 22 January. Speakers included:Tom Kucharz, from Ecologists in Action, Carlos Aguilar from Pablo de Olavide University (Continental Social Alliance), Paul Nicholson from EHNE (Vía Campesina) and Iñaki Cercana, from Ekologistak Martxan (UPV).The third and last round table of this conference focused on ?Geopolítica de los conflictos internacionales:acceso y control de los recursos naturales?. Speakers included: Arcadi Oliveres from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Balder Haregaats, from the Institute of Studies on Conflicts and Humanitarian Action (IECAH), Mónica Poded from the Pedro Arrupe Institute of Human Rights at Deusto, and Fernando Díaz del Olmo, from the University of Seville. In addition, the Pedro Arrupe Institute of Human Rights, in collaboration with the Foundation for International Relations and External Dialogue (FRIDE), held the presentation of a book entitled ?La Guerra y la Paz?, by Charles-Philippe David. He is lecturer in Political Science, head of the Raoul Dandurand Chair in strategic and diplomatic studies, and director of the Observatory on the United States, University of Quebec in Montreal.Mariano Aguirre from FRIDE took part in the discussion on this publication, which seeks to help to understand the current international system and take decisions in the fields of external politics, security, humanitarian action and cooperation.
