During the last 8 years, and coinciding with the creation of this Award, there has been an increase in the number of gypsy students who have completed the different stages and proceed to study Secondary education. This enables them to undertake further study such as Upper Secondary Education, Vocational Training and University education. In fact, this year, a gipsy female student who studied secondary education in Basque and obtained a good mark in the university entrance exam, will enter the Faculty of Law at the University of Deusto. This takes place within the framework of the current agreement between the Faculty of Philosophy and Education Sciences-FICE and Kale dor Kayiko Association.
The aims of this Award are, on the one hand, to express the pride of the gipsy people in their students for taking advantage of the opportunity they have to study since, in most cases, their elders did not have it; and on the other hand, to publicly acknowledge the work carried out by students throughout their educational stages, by the teaching staff and their families; and finally, to encourage them to pursue their studies.
Once this academic year has been completed, this association starts working on the following year to develop the educational programme that will be carried out by its Intervention Teams, which are made up of teachers, gypsies, experts within the field of Social Education, Social Work and Teaching. This initiative is carried out thanks to the agreement signed with FICE and that will be renewed for a further three years. Collaborating bodies include: BBK, the departments of Education and Social Affairs of the Basque Government and the Department of Education, Youth and Sport of Bilbao’s Town Council.
