Las mentoras de Inspira STEAM Galicia
A new node of the INSPIRA STEAM project starts in Galicia, at the hand of the University of Vigo, and joining the existing nodes of Euskadi, Catalonia, Madrid and Andalusia.
The first Inspira STEAM Galicia mentors will consist of 18 women graduated in disciplines such as industrial engineering, telecommunications or mining. They are all working in these fields and some of them are running their own companies. They will transfer their professional experience to 6th grade students from half a dozen schools in the Vigo area. This pilot experience will start in March and April 2019.
Throughout six one-hour sessions, both girls and boys, together in some cases, and separately in others, will work together with mentors, through games and other activities, on issues such as STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics), stereotypes, professions, scientific women in History or women today.
"For both girls and boys it is a great opportunity to meet a woman who had the opportunity and took the decision to develop a career in STEAM”, mentioned Ander Mimenza, responsible for the training of the mentors. He highlighted that it is important that the mentors are prepared for promoting girls’ critical spirit so they can freely decide what they want to be when they grow up.
After this first pilot experience, involving 6 centres, there will be other editions with more centres.
