The DESGENAI project (KA220-HED-F956A4D4), an Erasmus+ project led by the University of Deusto has started is path of creation of models and training materials that combines the flexibility and creativity of Generative Artificial Intelligence with the precision of Discrete Event Simulation (DES). The project, led by the University of Deusto, and participated by ESTIA - École Supérieure des Technologies Industrielles Avancées, has taken advantage of the 2025 edition of "24h de l'innovation pour la planète" event organized in Bidart, to make their first steps in modeling.
The event proposes to students, researchers, and industry professionals, some sustainability related challenges to be solved in 24h, racing against the clock. In these conditions, DEUSTO, representing the DESGENAI consortium (composed by DEUSTO, ESTIA, RINA Consulting and Scuola Superiore di Sant’Anna-Pisa), has presented a maintenance optimization problem, as the research team involved in the project has a wide experience in both maintenance and Discrete Event Simulation.
The optimization of maintenance is a key case for the DESGENAI consortium. Often considered as ‘the hidden cause’, poor maintenance influences on quality, speed, and availability parameters of manufacturing and logistics services, and their negative effect is covered often by overproductions, stocks, and other inefficiencies.
This 24-hour sprint is just the beginning. The models developed today will contribute to DESGENAI’s broader objective of creating a comprehensive training curriculum and an online platform available in English, French, Italian, and Spanish. By making these advanced digital tools accessible, the project aims to empower a new generation of engineers and managers to build more efficient, sustainable, and resilient industrial systems.
