On October 17 and 18, the University of Deusto is holding the IV Jornadas Jurídicas por la Palabra, a forum for lectures and debates organized in collaboration with the Professional Association of the Judiciary, the Foundation for the Judiciary and the Bizkaia Bar Association. The aim is to discuss current legal issues with magistrates and professionals. It is one of the most important events in the area of law in Spain, which has also been declared of institutional interest by the Council of the Judiciary of Argentina.
The Basque Government, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, the City Council of Bilbao, Osakidetza, the Association of Lawyers and Lawyers of the Basque Government (ALEGO) and the editorial Aranzadi La Ley are also participating in the conference. Important institutions that will help to address relevant issues such as social networks and their relationship with the increase in juvenile delinquency, animal rights, Artificial Intelligence in the Administration of Justice or obstetric violence. Important aspects of administrative law and arbitration in Spain will also be discussed.
On this occasion, the inaugural lecture entitled “Monarchy and Diplomacy” will be given by Charles Powell, director of the Elcano Royal Institute and 2nd vice-president of the Network for the Study of Contemporary Monarchies. Next, Emilio Lamo de Espinosa Michels de Champourcin, member of the Royal Academy of Moral and Political Sciences, founder and former president of the Royal Elcano Institute, as well as 1st vice-president of the Network for the Study of Contemporary Monarchies, will give the paper “Parliamentary Monarchies as Full Democracies. Their role in world conflicts”, which will be presented by José María Martínez-Virel, member of the General Council of the Judiciary.
Other prominent speakers, in addition to specialist magistrates from all over Spain, include the delegated prosecutor for computer crimes in the Basque Country, Arantza López Martín; the head of the Addictions Service in the Mental Health Network of Bizkaia, Rodrigo Oraá; the president of the Administrative Chamber of the High Court of Justice of the Basque Country, Luis Ángel Garrido; the head of the Gynecology Service of the Basurto Hospital, Mercedes Fraca Padilla; the director of the Legal Department of Osakidetza, Susana López Altuna; and Yolanda Paredes Vázquez, vice-president of the Professional Association of Magistrates in the Basque Country, among others.
Opening
The Rector of the University of Deusto, Juan José Etxeberria; the Mayor of Bilbao City Council, Juan Mari Aburto; the Minister of Justice of the Basque Government, María Jesús San José; the Regional Deputy for Public Administration and International Relations, Ager Izagirre; the dean of the Bar Association of Bizkaia, Maite Morillo; the president of ALEGO, Mikel Gotzon Casas; and the director of the Conference and territorial president of the Professional Association of Magistrates of the Basque Country, Emilio Llano de Espinosa Vázquez de Sola, will open the conference on Thursday, October 17, at 9:00 am, at the Paraninfo. This will be followed by lectures and round tables.
After this first day, held at the University of Deusto, the second session will be held on Friday, October 18, at the Bar Association of Bilbao. The participants will include Isaac Merino, judge of the Administrative Chamber of the Supreme Court; Antonio García Martínez, judge of the Civil Chamber of the Supreme Court; Juan Luis Ibarra, former president of the High Court of Justice of the Basque Country and of the Arbitration Commission of the Basque Country; Pilar Cuesta de Loño, judge of the Civil Chamber of the Supreme Court, and Juan Luis Ibarra, former president of the High Court of Justice of the Basque Country; Pilar Cuesta de Loño, lawyer of the Council of State and counselor of Women in a Legal World (WLW), and Diego Gómez, lawyer of the Vigo Bar Association, specialist in Administrative and Urban Law, and author of the legal blog “Esdejusticia”.
The conference will be closed at 1:45 p.m. by Gema Tomás, professor of Civil Law at Deusto; María Jesús del Barco, president of the Magistrates Association and exclusive dean judge of Madrid; Nuria Cerván, member of the Governing Board of the Bilbao Bar Association; and Aner Uriarte, exclusive dean judge of Bilbao.
