The Vice-rector for Research and Transfer, Rosa Santibáñez Gruber, and the Director of the International Research Project Office, Toñi Caro, represented the University of Deusto at the international conference Impact of Science: Finding shared approaches to assess, enable and accelerate impact on society organised by the AESIS network on 14-15 June in Ottawa (Canada).
The event brought together R&D evaluators, university managers, research councils, policy makers, funders and other impact stakeholders to share, evaluate and discuss best practices around the world on:
- Policy strategies for societal impact
- Creating (long-term) alliances between stakeholders
- Regional, national and international instruments for evaluating and achieving impact
- Current issues on public engagement, evidence-based policy, interdisciplinary approaches and harmonising definitions and assumptions.
DEUSTO shared its activities and experiences in the framework of the Master Plan “Social Impact of Research and the Strategic Plan Excellence and Transfer”.
It was concluded that the societal impact of research:
- can only be robust based on a well-balanced insight on how the impact of science on society can be measured
- should investigate the impact of the humanities, the social sciences and the hard sciences in one comparable, although not rigid, approach for accountability
- should include both the societal impact of scientific research and university education.
