On 20 September, the University of Deusto hosted the inauguration of a new edition of the training course on Social Inclusion aimed at professionals working in this field, promoted by the Department of Employment, Social Cohesion and Equality of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, which has already been attended by 240 people. In this 4th edition, 60 more professionals, in two groups of 30, will broaden their knowledge and skills in relation to the ‘Conceptual, ethical and methodological bases for intervention staff in Social Inclusion in Bizkaia’.

With Isabel Rubio, Dean of the Faculty of Education and Sport, Teresa Laespada, Deputy for Employment, Social Cohesion and Equality and Deputy General Deputy, opened the conference, within the framework of the ‘Gizartegune’ space for reflection, which in its 28th edition is entitled ‘Accompanying the uniqueness of people’, placing the community as a fundamental element in which the care of Basque society is framed in the first place.

The deputy Laespada said that ‘the Regional Government, public institutions, organisations, professionals and the university all share the view that the dignity of people is the fundamental principle of our work, an unavoidable commitment, because it is the very basis of fundamental rights and the key to achieving the goals of equality, the inclusion of diversity and, in short, social cohesion’. Since 2015, his work has focused on promoting the universalisation of the Public System of Social Services for Inclusion, in collaboration with the Third Sector and with an emphasis on the quality of care. To this end, she underlined the crucial role of professionals in social inclusion processes and reaffirmed his commitment to providing them with tools and training for their personal and professional development.

After his speech, the rest of the programme was followed by four presentations. Félix Arrieta, professor at Deusto, gave the first talk entitled ‘Reflecting on care in the community’. Claudia Calderón, member of the Basque Observatory of the Third Social Sector-EDE Fundazioa, then spoke on ‘Community learning in the third social sector’. ‘The integral health of homeless people’ was the theme of the third talk, given by Fran Calvo, from the University of Girona. Finally, María Villaescusa, from the University of Deusto, closed the day with the fourth paper entitled ‘Planning with a focus on the person’.
