A very pro-European visit
A few days ago, a group of 24 History students at the UD set out on a trip to the Parliament seat in Brussels. Two lecturers and a number of guest students enjoyed a very illustrative experience, visiting the institutional ins and outs of the European Union, as well as the life of a country that represents the essence of EC decisions.
Our host at the Parliament seat was the Member of the European Parliament, Jon Ortuondo. Thanks to his kind invitation, we could seein situ the places and work of those who strive to solve the future of the EU.
We could attend a working session of one of the Parliament Commissions (Finance Commission). This was followed by an informative and extremely didactic talk, and a debate among politicians, students and lecturers, which was of great interest to these visiting potential historians.
This stimulating and interactive morning was rounded off as we broke for lunch 'in the European style' at the Rue Wiertz seat.
As a whole, our History students could see for themselves some examples of a lifestyle in which both advantages and disadvantages can be felt everyday. What is more, despite today's globalisation, Belgian society still mantains its cultural characteristics, which are worthy of analysis.
