44,400 people are forced to flee their countries every single day due to poverty and violence. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo alone, there are more than 5 million people, mostly women, who are in that situation. On the way to Europe, refugees in neighbouring countries or displaced in their own country, these women live situations of extreme vulnerability and violence, without access to the most fundamental rights.

ALBOAN, in collaboration with the University of Deusto (Pedro Arrupe Human Rights Institute), the Jesuit Service for Refugees and the Vedrunas Congregation, presented the International Conference entitled “Women on the move: Violence and displacement in 5 African regions” that was held on 18 and 19 October at the University’s Auditorium.

At this meeting, we could gain insight into the situations of violence women experience in their migratory journeys through the testimonies of women themselves, and reflect on the necessary improvements in our practices to transform their situation.

With this aim in mind, this event was attended by leading human rights and women's rights activists such as Victoria Nyanjura from Uganda, Congolese activists Justine Masika and Caddy Adzuba, or Itziar Ruiz Gimenez, among others, as well as representatives of the university sphere, public institutions , African organisations and international humanitarian aid organizations.
