Others
The activities carried out by the members of the Faculty of Law during the last quarter of the year were intense across all areas. The faculty’s academic staff attended a wide range of international conferences, hosted seminars and conferences, bringing together leading experts, and received important awards.
With regard to outstanding achievements, special mention should be made of lecturers Saioa Articha and Belén García Álvarez. The former received the Jesús María Leizaola 2013 Award, granted by the Basque Government for her doctoral thesis entitled: Aspectos sustantivos y procesales del contrato de arrendamiento rústico. Su regulación en el Derecho Civil de Araba, Bizkaia y Gipuzkoa de los Siglos XVI a XIX y en la Ley 49/2003, de 26 de noviembre. Un medio para la gestión del patrimonio de la persona’.
The latter, Belén García, lecturer at the Faculty of Law of the University of Deusto received a Special Doctoral Award in the field of Social and Legal Sciences granted by the University of the Basque Country (UPV) for her PhD thesis “El régimen jurídico de las operaciones de carga y descarga de las mercancías en los distintos modos de transporte”.
In addition, the University of Deusto (UD) was granted the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence recognition award in Law of the European Union and International Relations by the European Commission.
The University of Deusto (UD) is the first and only centre of this kind in the Basque Country, thanks to its long-standing history and strong commitment to the studies related to European integration.
Some lecturers were also invited in the media to express their opinions on a number of issues under discussion. A good example of this during this term was lecturer Marta Enciso, who addressed Fagor’s current crisis.
The main leading role, our students
Most of the events we held were focused on and aimed at our students. Last November, 140 students from the University of Deusto Law Faculty took part in the “Model United Nations General Assembly simulation: the situation in Syria".
This new initiative, promoted by lecturer Antonio Manrique de Luna Barrios, attracted the interest of a large number of students. The conference on the transmission of cooperative values to youth and intercooperation in 21st century cooperatives, held on that same month, was equally successful in participation and contents.
As in previous years, this meeting resulted from the joint collaboration between the Basque Academy of Law, the International Association of Cooperative Law, the Institute of Tax Studies, CIRIEC-Spain and the Law Faculty at the University of Deusto.
A wide range of events
Our lecturers' activities were not only carried out within the University. The members of the “cooperativism, taxation, labour relations and social protection” and the EDISPe (Economy, Development and Social Innovation for People) research teams took part in the Symposium on Christian Social Thought, held at the Andalusia Loyola University (Seville), which brought together a total of sixty experts from UNIJES university centres.
International area
The lecturer in Private International Law at the University of Deusto, Javier Viaña, attended the Annual Conference of the International Chamber of Commerce in Miami CCI on CCI’s International Arbitration in Latin America, which was held from 3 to 5 November.
Peter Zumbansen, international expert in Research and Governance, delivered a Master Class at our Faculty and he also took part in the Conference Series and Research Seminars organised by Luis Gordillo, main researcher.
The Institute of Cooperative Studies (IEC) collaborated with the “Deusto Entrepreneurship Week 2013”in the organisation of a roundtable discussion on Social Entrepreneurship.
