This September saw the publication of the book 'Ciudades Inteligentes, Ciudades Sabias. Por una gobernanza democrática y colaborativa', a collective work that kicks off the City 2030 Collection and puts the present and future of cities in the spotlight.

Edited by Roberto San Salvador del Valle (professor at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences at the University of Deusto and director of the Deusto Cities Lab Chair), Fernando Villatoro (PhD in Business Administration, professor at the same Faculty and researcher at the Chair) and Geana de Miranda Leschko (PhD in Law and member of the University’s Global Engagement Office), the publication has collaborated with the participation of a dozen authors with different professional profiles.

The book takes a transdisciplinary approach to the role ofsmart citiesandwise cities. According to Roberto San Salvador del Valle, "Both must converge in models of democratic and collaborative governance to advance the sustainable human development of cities, territories and communities".

The use of science and technology is key to meeting the challenges of sustainable city development, but always taking into account the advantages and disadvantages they bring. For this reason, we need models that go beyond the idea of technological innovation as an end in itself, giving way to others that focus on cooperation between institutions, companies, social entities and citizens based on successful collaborative experiences, whether technology-based or not.

San Salvador del Valle concluded by saying that: "People must be placed at the core of strategies, not only as users and consumers, but also as active players in the transformation.

The collection now has a second issue entitled "Ciudades circulares, cohesivas y creativas. Por un desarrollo humano sostenible integral”, which will be in bookshops in the first half of October. In this case, the editors are María Jesús Monteagudo Sánchez, Nerea Aranbarri Kortabarria and Basagaitz Guereño Omil (lecturers at the aforementioned Faculty and members of the Deusto Cities Lab chair), together with around twenty academics and professionals from various disciplines.
