Bilbao Campus
More than 80 US students are participating this July in the summer courses and programmes organised by the University of Deusto’s International Spanish Centre (CIDE). For 25 years, CIDE has been responding to the growing demand for the Spanish language in the United States. The proposals also include a course in Basque Culture, which was taken in May and June by a group from Emmanuel College (Boston).
The students participating in July come from universities such as Nebraska, Mary Washington, Northwestern, Ramapo College, Grand Valley State University, South Dakota, UC Davis, Vermont, Ohio, Georgia, and St. Edward’s. They have come to Deusto to follow the Global Studies and Spanish programme. This five-week initiative aims to improve the students' level of Spanish, while acquiring new academic and personal skills.
This group will share the campus with another 25 students from Yale University, who, accompanied by four professors, are already in Bilbao to complete a language course they began on the Connecticut campus. In addition, a course for primary and secondary school teachers, developed in collaboration with the Spanish Embassy in Washington, D.C., began in the first week of July.
Through language learning and a wide range of cultural activities, these programmes offer genuine academic and social immersion, helping students gain a deeper understanding of the country’s cultural diversity. The classes are complemented by trips to Madrid, Toledo and San Sebastián, visits to coastal towns and historical sites, as well as participation in the San Fermín festival, among other activities.
With over 20 years of experience, the Deusto International Spanish Centre (CIDE) offers international students semester and summer programmes in areas such as Spanish Language and Culture, International Business, internships, Spanish language courses, and specialist training for teaching Spanish as a second language.
To this end, it has numerous agreements with foreign universities, which allow students to transfer academic credits earned at Deusto while offering them the opportunity to experience and immerse themselves in both Basque and Spanish culture. Over the years, more than 10,000 students have attended its classes, benefiting from high-quality teaching and personalised support that goes beyond the academic sphere.
