The University of Deusto officially opens the academic year 2007-2008


The University of Deusto has officially opened the new academic year 2007-2008. This ceremony, which was held on 20 September, started with a mass chaired by the Auxiliary Bishop of Bilbao, Karmelo Etxenagusia. This was followed by an academic ceremony that included and Opening Lecture entitled, El Bilbao emergente del Padre Arrupe, un vizcaíno universay, by María Jesús Cava, lecturer at the Faculty of Arts.

The General Secretary opened this formal ceremony with the reading of the annual report for the academic year 2006-2007. Then, tribute was paid to the lecturers and collaborators at this University who retired last year. This year, the guests of honour were emeritus professors. These included: José Angel Barrio Loza, Francisco Javier Elzo, Fernando García de Cortázar and Luis de Nicolás; lecturers Francisco Javier Acha, Iñigo Aguirre, Manuel Breva, José Echegaray, Fidel García, Francisco García, Peter Lavery, Abel Muniategui and Ricardo Notario; and collaborators Francisco Serrano, Román Gutiérrez, José Moya, Teófilo Casas, Avelina García and Isidoro Heras.

Opening Lecture

Then, the lecturer at the Faculty of Arts, María Jesús Cava, gave her Opening Lecture, which this year was devoted to Pedro Arrupe, Head of the Company of Jesus. He was born one hundred years ago in Bilbao, and the anniversary of his birth will be commemorated in November. He was the most famous Bilbao-born Jesuit, who stood out for being open, welcoming, sensitive, enterprising, polite and respectful to everybody. His personality did not go unnoticed in his community.This opening lecture was focused on this Jesuit?s personality, a world citizen- as he would define himself.

The Rector's Address

Following the Opening Ceremony, the Rector of the University of Deusto, Jaime Oraá addressed those present. During this ceremony, a few remarks were also made by the Regional Minister for Education, Universities and Research and by the President of the Basque Government, who officially opened this academic year.
