The University of Deusto pays homage to Abbé Pierre, founder of Emmaus community, during its annual Symposium on Advances in Drug Dependency


Last Thursday, 8 November, the Deusto Institute of Drug Dependencies held its annual Symposium on Advances in Drug Dependency on the topic 'Intervention in social exclusion and drug dependencies. The Confluence between social and public health policies'. Now in its 15th year, the University of Deusto took the opportunity to pay homage to Abbé Pierre's work, one of the greatest defenders of the dignity of homeless people in Europe and founder of the 'Emmaus community'.

The Regional Minister for Housing and Social Affairs of the Basque Government opened this Symposium, aimed at providing a forum for discussion among experts from the social and public health spheres in the field of drug addiction. During this Symposium, good practice experiences at national and European level were presented.  Then, Pedro Meca, a Dominican who has worked with ‘Compagnons de la nuit’ in Paris for 40 years, gave the opening lecture on the topic ‘El Abbé Pierre conciencia social en el estado de bienestar y en un mundo globalizado’. Another participant was Joan Subirats, Professor of Political Science at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, who gave a talk on ‘La reestructuración del estado del bienestar en Europa’.

This symposium ended with a round table entitled ‘Políticas de cohesión social en Europa’. Participants included Antonio Rodríguez, chairman of FACIAM and Spanish representative on Feantsa Board of Directors, who delivered a talk on 'FEANTSA, Federación Europea de Asociaciones Nacionales que trabajan con los sin techo', and Javier Pedrini, director of Emmaus Social Foundation and secretary of the executive committee of the Emmaus International Movement, who spoke about ‘El trabajo con las personas sin hogar’.During this Symposium, a second round table on 'La problemática social y sanitaria en salud mental en toxicomanías en la CAV ', was also held. Participants included Iñigo Lamarka, Ararteko, who gave a talk entitled ‘Respuesta a las necesidades básicas de las personas sin hogar y en exclusión grave’, and Joseba Gaya, Head of the Caritas Programme for the ‘Homeless’, and spokesperson of Beste Bi Platform. In the afternoon, two workshops entitled ‘El trabajo con ‘los sin techo’ en algunas ciudades europeas’ and ‘El trabajo de los sin techo en la Comunidad Autónoma (exclusión y drogodependencias)’ were held.
